Review: Run Clare Series

Hi Everyone!

At this stage the Run Clare Series is a distant memory, having finished in April. For me it may now be only a memory but its a lasting memory, of a Series that I will never forget.

What is the Run Clare Series?

The Run Clare Series involved 4 races and saw participants going from running 5k up to 10 miles within 4 months. Their tag line reads "4 races, 4 months 1 goal". The 4 races were throughout Co Clare, Ennis, Quilty, Ennis again and Kilnaboy. Registration for the event opened the previous year with an early bird rate of €50 if you signed up for all 4 races. Participants of the 4 races received a personalised number (for the first 250 registered) t-shirts, medals, goodie bags and a plaque.

Resolution Run 5K - Ennis

The first race was  the Resolution Run  5K, in Lee's Road Complex Ennis with ultra runner Keith Whyte as the official race starter. There were 700 other participants.

I struggled around the 5K course but I never allowed myself to walk and I completed the race in 34.51 so I completed it un under my target time of 35 minutes. I felt a great sense of achievement as I had completed the 5K non stop and for me this was huge. It was such a great feeling to start the series on a high!

Michael Egan Memorial 5 Miles - Quilty

The second race was a 5 mile run in Quilty Co Clare, along the beautiful West Coast. We honestly couldn't have asked for nicer scenery. I had been dealing with a pulled muscle in my back following a hike in the burren. I didn’t feel prepared but with all of that being said I pushed on and wouldn't let anyone stop me from running. I had hoped to run the 5 mile in under 50 mins but instead I ran it in 55.42 mins. I know I didn't reach my aim but I did well considering the week I had prior to the run. I felt such massive nerves building before this race but my friends, family and fellow runners were so motivating and encouraging. They always know what to say to me beforehand to put me at ease.

The scenery was beautiful on this race. We ran along the Atlantic Coast, which distracted me from my negativity! All of the other runners, and spectators, were hugely encouraging, which was needed at times!

Eamon Moloney 10K - Ennis

The Eamon Moloney Memorial 10K was my second attempt at a 10K. It was, for me, the most enjoyable race of the series. I had ran a 10k the previous week and it didn’t go too well so I was hoping that I would have a better result, which I did. I crossed the finish line in 1 hour and 7 mins and 22 sec.
The course itself was relatively flat except for the 2-5k markers, where we had a number of hills. There was nothing that I felt I couldn't manage though. Immediately after the race our times were available. I thought this was great as we were anxious to see how we actually go on! The race also had pacemakers available to those who wished to aim for a particular time. They were for 40 mins, 45 mins, 50 mins, 55 mins and 60 mins. I did not stay with any pacemaker because I knew that the pace would be too much for me but my sister stayed with the 55 min pacemaker and came in just under 55 mins.

Sonny Murphy Memorial 10 Mile - Kilnaboy

The final race in the Run Clare Series was the Sonny Murphy Memorial 10 mile race in Kilnaboy Co Clare (to those of you who don't know where Kilnaboy is, it's the home of Fr Ted's house!). The morning of the race was very wet and generally miserable, but the day turned out to be a beautiful one. It was a sunny blue sky kind of day and so was perfect for the final event in such a brilliant series.

The race started, and finished, at Kilnaboy church and took us past The Burren National Park. The views were fab and a bit distracting, which is a good thing as it stops you from thinking about actually getting over the finish line in one piece! It was a hugely supported race by locals, tourists and passersby.

I was quite sick the week leading up to the race, having been off work sick so needless to say I didnt get any training runs done prior to the race. I was on bed rest for a week. By the Friday prior to the race I felt somewhat good again and by Saturday I had made up my mind to participate in the 10 mile. I decided that I would run as much as possible and when I felt weak I would walk and that's exactly what I did! I ran slow and steady until just after the 4 mile marker and I then began to walk for 1/2 mile before running again for 1 mile. I repeated this pattern until the 9 mile marker, where I ran steadily until the finish line. I crossed the line in 2hours 0 mins 59secs. I couldn’t but be happy, even though I didn't run the full race, I did well considering how sick I was all week!

What Made It So Special?

This is a unique series. As far as I am aware (I may be wrong) there is nothing else like it in the country. The aim is to run 4 races in 4 months but to reach one goal of running 5K to 10 miles. The series provides a fantastic opportunity for runners of all skill levels to push themselves to their limit. For more experienced runners it was an opportunity for them to aim to not only participate in a 4 race series but to also aim to win the series. For beginners like myself it was the push needed to improve stamina by running longer distances.

One thing that we commented on was the distance that people had travelled to participate in the series. We looked at peoples t-shirts and saw people from:
Duleek
West Waterford
West Limerick
Loughrea
Cork
That alone was a tribute to how well the series was organised and how well the word had spread.

We found that the series was  a great opportunity to get some "Me time" and also to use it to meet people that you may not meet on a daily basis. Being from Co Clare myself but now living in West Limerick I found it great for catching up with people from home. I found that all participants that I spoke with were so friendly and encouraging. It felt like a little community. That might all sound a little cheesy but its true. I have made some lovely new friends and received some fantastic advice that I have taken with me on every run that I have completed following the series.

If I could find a negative of the series (Which is hard) is that it only went on for 4 months. I would love if it was run for 6 or even 8 months but then again I wasn't the one organising the event and I'm sure that it took a huge amount of effort, energy, resources, time and commitment.

Why Participate?

I truly believe that if I had not signed up for the Series (Which I did in a complete hormonal moment of madness!), I would not be capable of running the distances that I now comfortably run. The buzz and atmosphere was amazing and the encouragement from fellow runners and spectators was enough to make anyone feel great about themselves. The feeling of achievement and self fulfilment and motivation to run further and further was enough for me to push myself to reach the distance.

This series is great for runners of all levels but for beginners like myself it is a great push and motivation. At the start its easy to think that you wont reach the 10 mile distance but after each race that feeling changes from pessimism to optimism.

Thank you to everyone involved for producing such a hugely successful event. The turnout at each race is a credit to all of the time, energy and hard work that went into the Series. I am already looking forward to what lies ahead in 2016!

You can find more information on the Run Clare Series here. They also have a Facebook page, link here, as do Running in Clare, link here. I found that these pages were fantastic as they were regularly updated with race info and they also shared details of other races that were not part of the series.

The team are running a new 3 race series, the Run 5K Series and you can find all the details here. If you want to sign up I would do so asap as registration closes very shortly.

The A to Z of Me

Hi everyone!

Thanks to Eimear from Chirps from A Little Red Hen for the nomination! I think I am probably the last blogger left to do this but it was a fun challenge. Its taken me a little while to do this post because I found that I was over thinking it. I wanted it to be a true insight to me so I decided to scrap everything that I had written instead only writing what came into me head at that moment. I hope you enjoy....

A - My husband has just recently qualified as an ARBORIST (Tree Surgeon). For a while it wasn't easy, between studying and travelling the country for exams and assessments but it has all been worth it and he is loving his new trade. We have never spoken so much about trees and power lines. Colin and I are so proud of all your hard work Aiden!

B - I only started my BLOG in January and so far so good. I'm enjoying the freedom of it all but I just wish I had more time to commit to it. It's hard as I work full time as well as having a small man to look after. Thank you to all who have supported me so far!

C - My beautiful son COLIN was born on Fathers Day of last year, 15th June 2014. He has been a joy since he was born. The past year has really just flown by. I find it hard to believe that he is going to be 1 in a matter of weeks. Hes my little boy now and not my little baby anymore, saying that just feels strange. He is such a lively child and always on the go. He hates sitting, he just loves to be stuck into everything and we cannot take our eyes off him for a second but we wouldn't have it any other way.

D - We have 2 DOGS. They are black Labrador crosses and are brother and sister, Ozzie and Berry. They are now 3 1/2 and have the most beautiful temperament but they were hard work initially because they seemed to stay in the puppy stage for so long.

E - "EVERYTHING happens for a reason" and "what's for you won't pass by you". I repeat these sayings in my head on a daily basis and I do believe that they are true, for me it's all to do with the higher purpose in life!

F - Keeping FIT is important to me, more so since my son was born. I've been making a major effort to keep fit and healthy by running 3 days per week and hiking/climbing when possible.

G - I always loved my GRANDPARENTS but I realise how important they were in our lives growing up, now that I have my own son. He is absolutely crazy about all 4 of his grandparents and we try to see them as often as possible. When I was young we would spend most of our summer holidays at either of our grandparents houses and the memories will last forever.

H - Even though I now live in West Limerick, HOME will always be Co Clare.

I - I love the INTERNET. It's a fantastic resource but can also be a dangerous one, when used incorrectly.

J - Last Friday was the day that I closed one chapter in my life and on Monday I began a new one, when I started my new JOB. I will now be working only 15 mins from home and so I am going to save myself over a hour of driving time each day. My son will also benefit from my change of job as he will have an hour less of creche each day.

K - I love having KEEPSAKES that I'll forget about and then randomly come across every so often. They give me a lovely feeling of nostalgia.

L - I'm a LIBRA so I like balance in life and I tend to weigh up my options before making a decision. I hate being rushed into something and when I am rushed, I usually find that it's not the right decision, as a result I can be very slow or hesitant to make decisions!

M - Even though I am now married I will always be a MEEHAN. I'm so proud to be a Meehan and just because my surname is now Sweeney doesn't change that. To some people I will always be Denise Meehan and I quite like that!

N - Not a lot of people know this about me but I suffer hugely from NEGATIVITY and it seems to always hit me at the worst possible times. When I get hit by negativity it can really take a lot out of me and I find that I can become distant and introverted and often at times I think that people pick this up as me being a snob or standoffish. This is not the case at all. I tend to let the negativity make me paranoid and I often think "sure why would anyone want to spend time with me". I'm not going to speak to much more about this but I felt that it was important to mention because it is a part of me and its something that I have to deal with daily. I am working hard to try to stop this from happening so frequently.

O - Since our son was born we haven't had much opportunity to get OUT much but I love getting out. I love having something to look forward to and deciding what to wear. The preparation for a night out is so much fun (most of the time!).

P - I have great PARENTS, Margaret and DJ and they support and love me no matter what!

Q - I love being curled up under a QUILT or blanket, in particular during the cold winters in front of a cosy fire!

R - Since January I have began to RUN properly (Not just every now and then) and I love the buzz that I get from it. I love getting out in the fresh air and pushing myself to go farther than I did on a previous run. I also find that running helps me to clear my head and gives me some "Me Time". Its something that I do for me and the sense of achievement following a tough run, is fantastic.

S - I met my husband in SYDNEY. My 2 years in Australia, in particular my time in Sydney, will always hold a very special place in my heart.

T - I love to TRAVEL and to see new places, I only wish that we could travel more often. One of my favourite sayings is "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page" (St Augustine). I truly believe that travel broadens your horizons and can open up opportunities.

U - I hate having an UNTIDY house but with an 11 month old (who pulls and drags at everything) it's not that easy to have a showroom perfect house, it also doesn't help that we live in a teeny tiny cottage!

V - I placed my VOTE last Friday, in a historic referendum for the country of Ireland. Growing up we were always taught, by our parents, how important it is to exercise your right to vote. If you do not vote then you do not have a right to complain about the outcome of a referendum or election.

W - I'm not the first person to say so but I like a glass of WINE to unwind at the weekend. I don't get a chance to go out much so being able to unwind at the weekends is key to relaxing.

X -At Christmas my wonderful sister, Orla, gave my son a XYLOPHONE. Its made with beautiful timber and coloured metal. As much as I love it, I am now beginning to hate it because Colin has now realised that it makes such a loud noise. Oh my ears!!!!!

Y - When I was a child I had an attachment to a YELLOW soother which I used to call "My Yalla Soothie".

Z - ZZZZZZZZZ I love my sleep and god help anyone who gets in the way of it!!

At this stage I think most other bloggers have completed this post so I would like to nominate anyone who has not completed the A to Z of Me.

My Skincare Tips | #IrishBlogCollab

Hi everyone!

This weeks #IrishBlogCollab is all about Skin Care. I'm a fully qualified Beauty and Body Therapist so I know how important it is to have a good skincare routine. Here are some if my top skincare tips:

Daily Routine - Regardless of the type of skin that you have it's so important to look after it. Cleaning your skin twice daily is essential. During the night your skin sweats and produces natural oils so you should clean your skin first thing in the morning, otherwise applying makeup on top will clog your pores leading to nasty blemishes. Likewise it's important to clean your skin every evening. As the day goes on, as well as wearing makeup, your skin will sweat, produce more natural oils and also with environmental dust and particles in the air landing on your skin (it sounds horrible but it's true!), your skin needs to be cleaned at night. I cleanse, tone and moisturise my skin in the evening time and I was my skin with facial wash in the morning. This routine has been working for me and I do see a difference if I don't follow it!

Makeup & Sleep - Never ever sleep with your makeup on, no matter how tempting it can be. It is not healthy for your skin. If makeup is not cleaned at night time it will block and clog pores, leading to blemishes. Some makeup brands are marketed as being all natural and one cosmetic brand has even claimed that their makeup is so light that you can sleep in it! This is a strong claim but for me regardless of how light a makeup brand claims to be, it's NOT a good idea to sleep with your makeup on!

Water Intake - It is recommended that we drink at least 8 glasses if water each day. There are many reasons for this and ones such reason is to keep your skin healthy. Dehydrated skin can be dull in appearance, lacks collagen and elasticity and has many fine lines. I have noticed that my skin is much better in appearance, when I drink 8 glasses each day. Drinking plenty of water keeps the skin cells hydrated so reducing fine lines, that for me is a plus because I hate the thought of getting older

Exfoliation - I would recommend that you exfoliate twice per week. Exfoliating removes any dead skin cells and impurities on the skin surface. It also evens out the texture of the skin. I would use a mild exfoliant as I feel that an exfoliant that's too abrasive could harm your skin and possibly cause sensitivity.

Diet - For the skin, as with fitness, water intake and diet work hand in hand. Eating well is essential for healthy skin. I often find that my skin will break out if I've eaten poorly for a few days. Plenty of fruit and veg is needed in order to boost the collagen and elastin levels for healthy skin.

Face Mapping - The skincare brand Dermalogica provides a facial analysis called Face Mapping. The idea is that each area of your skin represents a different area of your body. It is great for understanding why you often break out in the same area i.e. The chin represents the ovaries, left and right depending on which ovary is ovulating. Face Mapping is great and it's worth looking into for anyone who has concerns about their skin. Dermalogica is widely available in salons so a simple google search should help you to locate a salon close by that provides the service.

I hope my tips and advice have helped.

Instagram Roundup | #IrishBlogCollab

Hi everyone!

Week 7 of the #IrishBlogCollab is our Instagram Roundup. I am ashamed to admit it but I am relatively new to Instagram so a lot of my photos are probably boring in comparison to others!!

My most recent photo detailed a little about me!

I provided a testimonial for the Run Clare Series. This was a fantastic series and I was delighted that the event organisers decided to use my testimonial on their website!

My sister and I before our first ever half marathon attempt at The Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run.

Enjoying the sunshine, while it lasted, the Irish weather is so unpredictable so I like to enjoy the little nice weather that we get.

Setting out on a training run. I get such a great buzz from running and have accomplished so much in my short running "career"!

I love inspirational quotes and this one has stuck with me. I sometimes get consumed with negativity so positive people are hugely important for keeping myself positive and happy.

Going for a stroll with my little man. This is the road up from my house and it's so peaceful. I love trying to get out with my little man to boost our Vitamin D levels whenever possible.

Another inspirational quote but this one is my Favourites of all time and it was mylovely sister who introduced it to me. I only wish that I could travel more than I do!

Recent Pinterest Finds | #IrishBlogCollab

Hi everyone!

Wow it's week 6 already of the #IrishBlogCollab and this weeks post is about our Recent Pinterest Finds.

I tend to dip in and out of Pinterest because I find it's addictive. My Pinterest Finds are all house related because at the moment we are  trying to decide on how to extend and renovate our little cottage. I hope you enjoy!

House Design (Link Here)

As I have mentioned, we live in a very small but lovely cottage. It has 5 rooms in total, with no hall or landing! We have 2 teeny tiny bedrooms so the plan is to extend and rennovate the existing cottage. I liked the extension on this house but realistically its probably a bit out of our budget. Every idea helps though!

Attic Space (Link Here)

See a Small Attic Transformed Into a Kid’s Hideaway via @domainehome

I think the use of the space here is great, it would be a fab place to relax and unwind with a good book or even as a playroom for the kids. The upstairs in our cottage at the moment would be ideal for this idea!

French Doors (Link Here)

Blue French doors. Wonder if I could modify the sunroom to make it look like that.

I can just imagine having BBQ's during the summer, wtih the family, in a beautiful area like this. We have a huge garden (Considering the house is tiny!!!) and to have doors like this to open out would be fab.

Stove Fireplace (Link Here)

We have a stove at the moment but I'd like to update the fireplace but also to keep some of the character and I think this nails exactly what I'd like.

Home Office (Link Here)

Home office - color for the tabletop, love the art saying about books & shoes, doesn't take much space to have a cute little office!

I work full time but in an ideal world I'd love to work from home and a home office like this one would be so nice. I would love to blog and work from this office. I love everthing about the layout and decor, its just to fresh!

Antique Oak Floor Boards (Link Here)

The colour of these floor boards is really nice. I love that it looks old but yet can be easily modernised. I think these would really suit the look that we are hoping for in our cottage extension.

Corner Chair (Link Here)

cozy corner chair.

I can just imagine sitting on this chair with my little babba just chilling. Its a lovely chair to relax and curl up in. I think it would suit the corner of the sitting room or even in an open plan kitchen/dining/sunroom.

Log Coffee Table (Link Here)

Log Coffee Table

Now this is something that I know that I could make myself. My dad has a farm and the corner of one fiel is very high so each year lightening strikes at least one tree. One of these trees, struck down during the winter just gone, was quite large and I actually said to Dad that I'd love to dry out some of the pieces of timer that he had cut in order to make a coffee table. I was going to get some toughened glass for the top of it. I still plan on doing it I jsut havent gotten around to it yet!

DIY Kitchen Lights (Link Here)

How cool are these lights?! I like to think that I am a crafty person but I'm not too sure if I could manage to make these. I think they would look so great and I'd love them in my kitchen!

Window Photo Frames (Link Here)

Old Windows To Display Family Photos @Christina Childress Childress Childress Childress Wiltjer does Tim have two identical windows sitting around in his barn??

This is a great idea and so so easy to do. I think it looks very vintage too and so would suit my little cottage. Its amazing what you can do with a piece of "Junk" isnt it?

Walk in Wardrobe (Link Here)

Every girls dream and I'm no different. Ideally I'd love a big walk in wardrobe but I suppose I need to be realistic too because I'm sure space wise and money wise this wardrobe wuold be way over our budget but I think I'll definitely use it as inspiration.

Jewellry Storage (Link Here)

I'm like a magpie! I love anything that sparkles or glitters and so my jewellry collection is big (Its mainly costume jewellry though). I am also an organisational nut when it comes to my jewellry so I love this idea of well organised, easily viewable jewellry storage.

Childrens Timber Playhouse (Link Here)

Daddy DIY How cool is this - When i get a yard I'm making the husband make this.

What child would nto love this? I know that my little man and his cousins would never leave it! When I win the lotto I'll make sure that its one of my first purchases!

I love everything listed above but who knows whether I will actually use, try or take inspiration from them when we actually start work on our house!

Croagh Patrick Climb May 2015

Hi everyone!

So on Saturday we set out nice and early for Croagh Patrick, near Westport in Co Mayo. We were so lucky that the weather cleared, following the horrible week of rain that we had just had. The conditions were perfect for climbing, clear, cool and dry. Driving towards Westport you could clearly see Croagh Patrick with its well worn trail and the excitement and nerves began to build.

This was my second time climbing Croagh Patrick and this time I was much more prepared. Last time, back in 2011, I though I'd be well able but I found it so difficult (it didn't help that I had no fitness and climbed in jeans!) and I was in pain for a full week afterwards. This time I was ready!

Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick is a 764 metre mountain 8km outside Westport in Co Mayo, overlooking Clew Bay. It is Irelands holiest mountain with a pilgrimage taking place there on the last Sunday in July each year.

At the very bottom of the mountain there are a number of steps to be climbed and these would tire anyone out especially when you get to the top of them and look up. Its very daunting to see the mountain ahead and to think about the task that you are about to take on. You can see people dotted along the trail all slowly and carefully trying to make their way to the top.

The climb is made all the more difficult because of the ground. It is covered in loose rocks and stones. In some areas there are even flat rocks that can become slippy when wet. The first third and last third of the climb are the most difficult with the last third probably being the hardest. There is no need for a guide as the trail is very well worn so you can see where you are going all the way up. The last 100 yards can be very difficult to climb but more so to come back down and the loose stones can easily knock you off balance. I know all too well as I fell twice on the way back down but luckily I didn't hurt myself.

The climb itself is tough but you will see people of all shapes, sizes, ages and fitness levels attempting to reach the top. When I first climbed Croagh Patrick, back in 2011, I had no fitness and found it extremely difficult. I was much fitter this time around but I still found it tough!

The Climb Itself

Orla, Aiden and I headed off at approx 12.30. We were fully equipped with all of our gear. We had walking poles, boots, water packs and even energy gels. We also had chocolate and jellies to snack on. The day itself was nice so we didn't need our waterproof jackets or anything else that might weigh us down.

We set off on our way with Aiden pushing on ahead and Orla and I climbing at our own comfortable pace. It wasn't long before he was half way up the mountain. We lost sight of him but we had told him to keep going all the way to the top and we would meet up there! Climbing is such a different kind of fitness to running so even though we are both fit, we found this difficult. Aiden, on the other hand, works as an Arborist (More commonly known as a Tree Surgeon) so he had the right type of fitness for the climb, thanks to his job.

Orla and I climbed 1/4 of the way before needing to take out our walking poles. I found these a huge help because if I lost my balance, which can happen a lot due to the uneven ground, they helped to steady me. We would climb for as long as possible and if we needed a break we made sure that we didn't stop for long as its so easy to get cold.

Over half way up there is a lovely flat area and it gave us the chance to relax and take in the views instead of the constant climb. The last third was, for us, the most difficult. We took our time, stopping when we needed a little rest. At this point the trail is narrow, steep and dangerous. There were a number of people stopped resting and some people even had folding camping chairs!

Each time we thought we were nearly at the top, the trail would turn the corner and we would  have more to climb. We finally made it up after 1 1/2 hours. Aiden got up in an hour but waited for us at the top. The church at the top was closed so we just took some photos and sat down for a little while taking in the beautiful scenery.

We spent 30mins at the summit before beginning our decent. I found descending to be much more strenuous on the legs than the climb. I also slipped twice, luckily not hurting myself, but even with my walking poles I still had to be extra careful. You need to dig your heels into the ground when descending and try not to lean forward. We went at a fast enough pace but Aiden, again, was like superman, getting to the bottom in 35mins! It took Orla and I just over 1 hour to descend the mountain and by that stage we were glad to be on flat ground.

That evening we went for a nice meal and some drinks in Wesport. None of us were particularly sore or tired and even the following day but by Monday, 2 days after climbing, we were all feeling stiff on our legs. I found it hard to go down the stairs at home and at work, but it was all worth it.

As stiff as I was following the climb and as tough as it was I am hoping to climb it again during the summer with my family. The thrill of reaching the top and taking in the breath taking views and the sense of accomplishment is addictive!

10 Things Under €10 | #IrishBlogCollab

Hi everyone

This week for the #IrishBlogCollab we are talking about "10 Things Under €10". I decided that I would show my mothering side by talking about 10 "Baby" Things Under €10. Having a baby can be so costly so I think its a great bargain when you can get anything for under €10. It all adds up, leaving you with a giant big hole in your pocket.

My 10 Baby Things Under €10 are:
  1. Terry Towel Squares
I had 30 of these (Yes, 30!). My son used to spew a lot and I found I was never without one of these cloths. I found them much better than the muslin cloths for soakage. The ones that I got were actually advertised as the "Reusable Nappies" and I got them from Guineys for €1.25 each.
  2. Clevamama Clevafeed
This is such a handy little thing for a teething baby and to introduce new flavours. You just pop open the feeder and place some food into the teat. I found it great for introducing my son to new fruits. When my little man was teething I would put some cold fruit into the teat and let him chew on it.  It costs approx €6.99.
  3. Calpol Vapor Plug & Nightlight
I love this product (Even for ourselves!!!). It releases lavender and camomile vapours to allow for easy breathing during the night. It also has a handy blue nightlight. It costs approx €8.99 and is available from any Supermarket or pharmacy.
  4. Car Sunshade
These are so handy for trips in the car, in particular now that summer is approaching. I hate to look into at my son and see him squinting from the sun so these really help to protect his little eyes. They are actually on special in Aldi from Sunday 10th May for €5.99 for 2!
  5. Foam Tiles
My son is at the crawling stage and I hate him crawling on the hard cold tiles so I bought some foam tiles for the floor. They come with different patterns, shapes, letters and numbers. I got the tiles with the numbers. I found that they varied hugely in price and would cost anything from €10 for 10 all the way up to €70. I ordered mine from ebay.ie and they cost me €9.99 incl postage. They are approx 1ft by 1ft in size.
  6. Babypotz
Once my son started on solids, finding reasonably priced food storage was a challenge. I like to make food in bulk and freeze it down but to buy storage pots in big quantities was extremely costly. That was until my lovely friend Eimear introduced me to Babypotz, link here. I ordered the Stage 2 Weaning Pots (For 6+ months) on a Wednesday afternoon and they arrived at my door on Thursday morning! They cost €8.50 for 20 X 3ox pots. They are dishwasher and microwave friendly and are suitable for use in the freezer and also in the steriliser. The pots can be bought in a range of sizes so I actually went back and ordered the larger sizes and I use them for everything, not just for food storage!
  7. Sock with Grips
Now that our little son is crawling and climbing, walking is the next step and I have found that he slips quite easily when wearing normal socks. My mother got him 2 pairs of socks in Blarney Woollen Mills (Approx €8.99) with grips on the soles. They are great for when he is on timber or tiled floors. They are expensive for one pair but I have found them great. You can get them in any good nursery/baby shop.
  8. Caldesene Powder
This is a product that I use on my son to help with nappy rash, not that he ever gets much, but I found that the Caldesene Powder, when applied if his bum was particularly sore, soothed and calmed the redness. I would only use it if necessary. Its a great product and has other uses, aside from just nappy rash treatment, like heat rash treatment! It costs approx. €6.80 for 55g.
  9. Baby Bath Toys

These are not a necessity but I have found that the older my son gets the more he loves his baths so having a few bath toys have been great. He hates having his hair washed so once that is done I'll give him a few of the toys and he has great fun slashing about. They are so reasonable, starting at approx. €2, and can be bought almost anywhere. They can be bought individually or be bought as a multi pack.
  10. Musical Nursery Rhyme Books
I love these because they are a great way for you and your child to interact, although at times the tunes drive me mad when played again and again and again! They can be bought with every different nursery rhyme. We have one with the tune to "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and my little man loves it. They can be quite cheap but can also be very expensive depending on where you buy them but we found one on Amazon.com for €9.99.
That's my list, its a mixed bag really but I used everything on the list and found them great!
